  • The Keto Diet - Powerful Cancer Treatment? What Science Says

The Ketogenic (high fat - up to 90% of the calorie intake of fats) diet - a powerful tool for the treatment of malignant tumors.

Especially for the treatment of malignant brain tumors. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. Researchers estimate that about 1600 people die a day because due to cancer.

Cancer is usually treated comprehensively: surgery + radiation + chemotherapy. Many different diets have been studied with the goal of their anti-cancer properties.

And almost all diets were not effective. But the ketogenic diet (low carbohydrate) was effective for cancer treatment.

A study in mice (see the picture) showed that the ketogenic diet increased the survival time of mice by 56%, and if oxygen therapy was added to the keto diet, the survival time was increased by 78%.
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23755243

Another very impressive study was conducted in 2007. For 22 days, mice with cancerous tumors were fed the ketogenic diet. Also studied and the actions of other diets. A striking fact was discovered.

The first group of mice was fed normal food. 100% of the mice from the first group died from a malignant tumor of the brain.

In the second group of mice, they were kept on the keto diet. 60% of the ketogenic diet mice survived and did not die from a brain tumor.
In the third group of mice, in addition to the keto diet, they were supplied with ketones. And all these mice survived 100%.

This does not mean that this diet can cure cancer without traditional methods. But this means that it can greatly increase the effectiveness of traditional treatment and greatly increase the chance to be cured.

The ketogenic diet is very low in carbohydrates, high in fat and moderate in protein. In conditions of glucose deficiency, fat becomes a major source of energy after a few days of such a diet. The brain begins to feed not on glucose, but on ketone bodies.
Such a diet basically provides only beneficial changes for health. But take into account that long-term studies with the use of the ketone diet in humans for decades have not yet been enough.

Using the ketogenic diet is very effective in losing weight. For this purpose, the calorie intake should consist of 60-75% of fat, 15-30% of proteins and 5-10% of carbohydrates. However, for the treatment of cancer, the amount of calories from fat can be increased to 90%.

If you deprive a cancerous tumor of glucose, then it can be starved with fat.

Almost all cancer cells have one thing in common: they feed on carbohydrates to grow and multiply. When your diet (ketogenic diet) contains almost one fat, the blood sugar level drops.

A cancer tumor "starves", grows much more slowly, or even decreases in size and even dies. If the brain can eat ketone bodies instead of glucose, then the cancerous tumor eats only carbohydrates.
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4215472
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26782788

Other mechanisms through which the keto diet suppresses cancer. The ketogenic diet lowers the level of the hormone insulin in the blood.

The more it is in the blood, the better the cells grow, including cancer cells. Therefore, the less insulin is in the blood, the less malignant tumors grow.
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3267662

Studies have also shown that cancer causes oxidative damage in the body’s mitochondria. The keto diet reduces oxidative stress and stimulates the formation of new mitochondria.

Research on the treatment of cancer by using the ketogenic diet in animals.
Scientists have been studying the ketogenic diet as an alternative cancer therapy for over 50 years.

Until recently, most of these studies were conducted on animals. It has been shown that the keto diet can reduce tumor growth and increase animal survival.

In one study, a 65-year-old woman with a malignant brain tumor (glioblastoma) was operated on. But a malignant tumor of the brain aggressively metastases even after surgery and grows again. After surgery, this woman began to practice a keto diet.

During this time, the progression of the tumor slowed down significantly. Then they tried to return to normal nutrition, and after 10 days the tumor began to grow aggressively again.

    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20412570

Two more girls with a brain tumor also used the keto diet. One of the girls reported an improvement in the quality of life and remained on a diet for 12 months. During this time, her illness did not progress further.

    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7790697

The effects of the keto diet were studied in 16 patients with cancer. Several people abandoned the diet for personal reasons. Two patients died at the very beginning of the experiment - they started treatment late.

Only 5 patients remained on the ketogenic diet for 3 months of the study. They reported better health, better sleep, and no side effects caused by the diet.
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21794124

Click image for larger version Name:	virus.jpg Views:	1 Size:	34.8 KB ID:	149

In 27 patients with gastrointestinal cancer during the study period, tumor growth increased by 32.2% among those who ate high-carb foods, but decreased by 24.3% in those on the ketogenic diet.

    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16839923

In another study, three out of five patients on the ketog diet combined with radiation or chemotherapy experienced complete remission. Interestingly, the other two participants, who did the same thing but stopped using the ketogenic diet, received tumor growth progress.

    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4371612/

The ketogenic diet can be used to prevent cancer.Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) is important for the development of cells and improve their nutrition, as well as reduce their self-destruction.

Unfortunately, this also applies to cancer cells. After all, with increased IGF-1 in the body, cancer cells grow better - better supplied with blood + worse self-destructing. IGF-1 dramatically increases the risk of cancer.

The ketogenic diet lowers the level of IGF-1 in the body. This can prevent the development of many types of cancer in the future.
    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1...MC2394295.

This is why IGF-1 inhibitor drugs prolong life and protect against cancer. Examples of IGF-1 inhibitors: metformin, vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), aspirin, coffee.
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4095988/

Studies show that high blood sugar and diabetes are factors that greatly increase the risk of cancer.
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20587728

The ketogenic diet is a very effective way to lower blood sugar and treat diabetes.
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2633336/

The ketogenic diet is very effective for losing weight. Obesity is also a powerful factor that increases the risk of cancer.

So, if there is cancer, then a very powerful treatment can be used - the ketogenic diet in addition to the main treatment therapy prescribed by the doctor.

    • Can Rice Be Turned Into a Low-carb Product?
      by Jeff Wierling

Rice is one of the most popular foods on the planet. But the problem is that rice groats contain 75-80% carbohydrates, mainly starch. Boiled rice has fewer carbohydrates - 25-30% because a significant part of the weight comes from water, but a third is a lot.

Is it possible to find a way of cooking rice, that would significantly lower its carbohydrate percentage and make it a healthier product?
